My First Contribution: Translating My First Strings
Introduction ✨
Hey, it’s me, again! In this stage of my project, I was ready to make my first real contribution to WordPress. After exploring the platform and understanding how everything works, my goal was to start translating my first strings into Spanish (Costa Rica).
Development ✨
Once I felt comfortable using translate.wordpress.org, I went back to the Weaver Xtreme theme and accessed its translation section. From there, I selected the Spanish (Costa Rica) locale and opened the list of strings available for translation. This was my first time interacting directly with the translation interface as a contributor.
I started by choosing simple strings to translate so I could better understand the process. Each string displayed the original text in English, and I had to provide the correct translation in Spanish. As you can see, this marked my first contribution, since I successfully translated my first string for the theme.
At first, I was a bit unsure about how to phrase some translations naturally, specially making sure they sounded right for Costa Rican Spanish. To solve this, I tried to keep translations clear and natural, took my time reading the context and used my knowledge of both languages.
After writing my translations, I saved them and marked them as suggested. Even though they are not immediately approved, this is part of the contribution process.
In this step, I learned how to make my first real contribution to WordPress. It was a great experience to see how my knowledge can help make themes more accessible to others. I also realized that translation requires attention to detail and understanding the context, not just translating words directly.
