Making Progress in Polyglots: Translating Strings

Introduction ✨

Hey community! At this stage of my project, my goal was to continue contributing consistently and achieve meaningful progress in my translations. After completing my first strings, I wanted to push myself further and see how much I could accomplish.

Development ✨

I continued working on the Weaver Xtreme theme, focusing on translating content into Spanish (Costa Rica). In this phase, I successfully translated 100 strings, which felt like a huge milestone in my contribution journey. However, it’s important to mention that these translations have not been approved yet. In WordPress, contributions go through a review process, so translations are initially submitted as suggestions and later validated by editors.
As I progressed, I encountered some important challenges. One of the main ones was that the Costa Rican Spanish glossary for this theme is almost nonexistent, so there were very few references to guide my translations. Another thing I noticed is that only two people (including myself) have contributed to this locale for this theme, which made me realize how valuable and impactful my work is.
Because of this, I had to rely a lot on my own judgment. To handle this, I:
  • Thought carefully about context instead of doing literal translations
  • Focused on keeping translations clear and natural
  • Tried to be consistent with terminology across all strings
  • Reviewed my own work to maintain coherence
Over time, I became much more confident and faster when translating. What felt challenging at the beginning started to feel more natural. Also, it was awesome to see some of my badges in my profile 🙂

In this stage, I learned that contributing to WordPress is a process that involves not only translating but also waiting for validation and feedback. Even though my translations are not approved yet, reaching 100 translated strings is a big achievement and shows my commitment to the project.
Next, I will continue improving my translations and, if possible, follow up on their approval to ensure they can be used by the community 💪🌎
This is my fourth post out of eight, so stay tuned for the upcoming ones and join me on this adventure 🚀
